Can anyone confirm that the larger Mastiff dog that was Nick Nolte's dog
in the movie was a Cane Corso?

Thanks

the American Humane Association states that the dogs were a Poodle, a
Staffordshire Terrier Mix, and a Mastiff Mix.

Thanks,
Seeing that the Cane Corso is a Mastiff breed, it could have been one. Most
people don't do the tail and ear croppings that are breed specific to a mix,
so I am guessing it was a Cane Corso.

a Google search for "the hulk" + "cane corso" returns 18 hits,
none of them supporting your guess. the only info i was able
to turn up was that the dogs were "designed" by Lee's son and
were "modelled on a bull mastiff, pitbull terrier and French
poodle respectively." IOW, the dogs were CGI.

and this tweaks my BS meter. from
http://www.zap2it.com/movies/news/pstory/0,3382,17344,00.html

"They ended up putting a suit with dots on the dogs -- the
poodle was portrayed by a 130-pound Doberman, the other two a
Mastiff and a pit bull. The recorded real-life fights with
stunt men were then translated to computer generated
characters and the dots corresponded to each animated
character's movement."

a 130lb Dobe?! IDTS.

The dogs were not CGI. They showed the real dogs 3 or 4 times during the
movie.

BTW,
when they showed the dog used for the CGI "mastiff mix," it looked
identical to a Cane Corso. I know 2 breeders who said the same thing.

Shelly,
It is not a great movie, I agree, but the DVD version has a lot of extra
things in it including the dogs used for the CGI footage. If it was not a
Cane Corso, it was some other large mastiff looking breed with cropped
ears, tail and about 160 lbs or so! :-)

Is that is so, then it had to have been the largest pit bull on the
planet. It's snout was too long to be a pit too. My wife watched the
movie the other night.

he was a solid, muscular dog, but he wasn't freakishly large for an
APBT. there's a huge amount of morphological variety in the breed, to
the point that even those who are active in the breed can have trouble
IDing them.

The only reason I thought it to be ludicrously large for a pit bull was in
the scene when it jumped up on the door of a car. It's head was at the top
of the window. Who knows, maybe they made the dog taller like they do many
actors like Tom Cruise and Sly Stallone! :-)

i haven't seen the movie since it was first out, so i don't recall
that scene. scale is everything, though. how large was the car? my
Boxer is quite petite--47lbs--but her head would easily reach the top
of my car window if she put her feet on the door. she can easily kiss
my chin when she's standing on her hind feet.

there are a lot of idiots out there who breed pit bulls for size. many of
them bring in blood from various Mastiff breeds to accomplish this.
unfortunately, the more they breed for looks, the more we see dogs with
unreliable temperaments.
